Micky van de Ven found the net twice as Spurs extended their unbeaten run in away games in the Premier League and handed Everton their initial loss at their new home.

The Toffees were undefeated in their five previous fixtures at their new ground at Bramley-Moore Dock, having left their historic home behind after more than a century at the end of the previous campaign.

But Tottenham's leader the Dutchman pounced twice from set-pieces in the opening 45 minutes to place their impressive record at risk, and they were failed to mount a comeback before the midfielder - assisted by former Toffees attacker the Brazilian - nodded in a third to seal the victory.

Jake O'Brien thought he had levelled the scores five minutes after the defender's opener, glancing a powerful header past Guglielmo Vicario from an Everton corner.

Beto, in the meantime, failed to convert a handful of chances, while Vicario made a succession of fine saves to ensure the London club went five matches on the road unbeaten in the English top flight.

But the VAR stepped in, advising Craig Pawson to review the goal on the screen and the official ruled that the winger and the attacker were in an illegal position and had impeded with the Spurs keeper.

The win elevates the manager's side up to third in the division, a handful of points off north London rivals and table-toppers Arsenal.

The Merseyside club remain 14th and sit half a dozen points clear of the relegation zone.

Tottenham analysis: The defender excels in duties at each end of the field

Following a drab midweek display in the Champions League against the French side, where they managed a mere two shots on target, Frank opted for Randal Kolo Muani up front instead of ex-Everton forward Richarlison.

The summer signing was unable to make much of an impact before being substituted for Richarlison after an hour on the field, but it turns out he wasn't needed in the end.

Centre-back the Dutchman converted into an offensive threat to be reckoned with.

Tottenham's opening strike came from a well-worked set-piece play, with Rodrigo Bentancur heading the ball toward the face of goal for an free the defender to score.

And Ven de Ven - stepping up as skipper in the Argentine's unavailability - notched his second in first-half stoppage time as he outjumped the England keeper to nod in.

The Dutchman was just as outstanding in defensive duties, partnering effectively with Kevin Danso as the pair dealt excellently with the 34 crosses sent their way by the opposition.

Toffees breakdown: Everton lacking finishing touch

The club's new home had been a fortress, but it appears the freshness may have worn off somewhat and fans headed to the exits after Sarr's final goal for Spurs.

The break in Everton's unbeaten home run won't be a major worry for David Moyes, but their attacking woes are.

Beto and the other striker - the Toffees' pair of established strikers - had scored just one league goal combined before Sunday's match.

And they were unable to contribute to that miserable tally on a damp and dreary night on in Liverpool.

The striker's form was summed up when he chose to overhead kick a clear chance from close range, despite having room and time to reposition for a more conventional attempt that would have tested Vicario.

The substitute, as well, was unable to influence the game after coming on for the starter in the second half.

It wasn't for a shortage of chance. The majority of Everton's attacks came through Grealish and Ndiaye, who tirelessly whipped dangerous balls into the Spurs penalty area.
