On his first day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “reimagine” America's largest city, declaring “a fresh chapter” and an ambitious commencement to his administration.

An Unprecedented Leader

The new figure, who was a relatively obscure state assemblyman, is the city's first Muslim mayor. He also made history by being the inaugural to be sworn in using the Qur'an.

“A time such as this is rare and rarer still is it that the citizens whose hold the mechanisms of progress,” Mamdani remarked.

Ignoring suggestions to be modest, the mayor was emphatic: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to redefine is that of modest goals. Beginning today we will lead expansively and audaciously.”

Governing with Socialist Ideals

Mamdani openly embraced his core beliefs. “I was elected as a socialist leader and I will lead as one. I will not abandon my principles for worry of being called extreme,” he proclaimed to an enthusiastic response.

The swearing-in was a two-part event, beginning with a midnight oath-taking in a disused subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the front steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's ascent as a victory over powerful interests.

A Costly Policy Agenda

Mamdani now faces one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a plan featuring:

• Subsidized daycare
• Free buses
• A rent freeze for approximately 1 million households
• A trial program of municipally-operated grocery stores

The projected $10 billion expense of these programs may pose a hurdle to fund. Mamdani has pledged to increase levies for the city's top earners and big business. However, as a municipality subject to the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Navigating Political Headwinds

The new mayor also faces apprehension from some Jewish New Yorkers alarmed by his past stances regarding Israel. Sensitivities were highlighted during the transition when a appointments director resigned over controversial past comments.

Mamdani has attempted to address these tensions by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, avoiding the optics of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “socialist” and threatened withholding government money. Despite this, a recent meeting between the two was reportedly surprisingly cordial.

The Core Tests of Governing

Ultimately, New York mayors are evaluated by their ability in providing basic services: sanitation, curbing the rodent problem, fixing roadways, and ensuring smooth transit service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his administration's anti-crime efforts, pointing to historically low numbers of murders and shootings in 2025, with 301 homicides reported.

As his administration begins, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Queens apartment to the historic Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a unusual piece of advice about a reputed resident spirit in the home, which reportedly only troubles those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his speech with a direct declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
