Fed Reduces Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Calendar Year During Financial Instability

The US central bank reduced borrowing costs on Wednesday, representing the second reduction this year during financial volatility stemming from the government closure and tariff policies.

Decision Comes at Extraordinary Moment for Federal Reserve

The move to cut the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the Fed. The authority has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Highlights Labor Market Changes

In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the jobless rate had increased but remains low. “Job gains have slowed,” the statement reads. “Inflation has risen and remains somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Collection of important economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are on leave during the closure.

Information Shortage Impacts Policy Decisions

The Fed usually studies BLS data to assess employment trends, such as the number of employment gains created to the market and the current unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was released in early September, before the closure, and gave a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the jobs market in August.

The figure of positions added to the economy in August was down by more than 100,000 since the spring, and unemployment crept up to four point three percent – the peak since 2021.

Private Data Indicate Ongoing Slowdown

Though BLS was set to publish last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it halted its publication once the shutdown began. Private payroll firm ADP reported recently that the private sector eliminated thirty-two thousand jobs in September, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has declined significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman said earlier this month, a trend he had earlier said comes from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Shows Moderate Rise

Though BLS’s jobs report has been paused, the agency still issued its price statistics for September that showed that prices are rising, although slowly. Costs increased 3% over the last year, the highest since January. In spring, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target price increase is 2%.
