A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the pace and management of the country's major government projects.
The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a route built to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.
“We are going to meticulously determine the cause of this tragedy,” affirmed the national leader.
The official reported that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The official stated plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those affected.
Flagship Project of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the former leader, whose presidency concluded the year before. This venture was a hallmark of his government's economic goals for the southeastern region.
Another massive railway undertaking from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to stimulate the economy of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Project Execution and Safety Concerns
The construction of both train projects was overseen by the army, marking a notable increase of its duties in civilian works. They were completed at an fast-tracked rate, surpassing expectations to be at least partly launched before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently sparked significant concerns over construction quality.
- Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This involves an earlier crash this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced several non-fatal derailments.
Appeals for Investigation and Halt
In the wake of the catastrophe, the chief of a key rival party demanded an immediate halt in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This pause was suggested pending a comprehensive technical review. The party declared that the loss of life "calls for prompt explanations."
In reply, the national leader asserted that the train had been running in complete adherence to all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the construction and management of these strategic undertakings.
